Oh boy, your very courageous... I'm not even going to touch the silk hankies I have in my stash with a 10-foot pole before I've spun yarn for a sweater :) I have some merino tencel that I find very slippery, so I can't imagine what pure silk feels like. The only tip I can give you is to give your hands a good scrubbing (as in a scrub to remove dead skin) as the silk will catch on any little thing it can...

goatsmilk soap, of course! Because after you're done washing your mouth out with it, your hands will be soft and ready to spin more silk. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI found the only thing that helps me spin silk is to do a thorough hangnail check, re-buff my nails to make sure there are no snaggy bits, and keep putting on a nice shea-butter moisturizer (L'Occitane is my personal fave). Good luck!
That roving is gorgeous!!! Your spinning looks wonderful, do you feel like you have the hang of it? Isn't is sweet to spin silk? I can't wait to see it plied, it will surely be stunning.
ReplyDeleteI should let you know that I find I often need to add more twist to my plied silk after the first time I ply it. It seem to loosen up a little after I wash it, but, your mileage may vary.
Are you sure you don't want any lava? Because I can get some fresh. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI recommend Castile soap. The taste isn't too bad.
ReplyDeleteSugar or salt rubs on the hands helps a bit. Also, if you have some raw wool (with the grease still in it), work with that then switch to the silk. Also Neutrogena Intensive formula (Fisherman's formula) works well.

It's gorgeous. There is a woman in our spinning group who spins silk all the time. Then again she is a super spinner.
